The apostle John is taken into the heavenly throne room and what a glorious scene it must have been! All of heaven singing praises to God on His throne. John can merely describe this heavenly vision with earthly terms. When the artist researched to do this illustration, she learned that the word “jasper” was used in those days to describe the brilliant precious diamond. It symbolized absolute purity. The carnelian, a blood red translucent gemstone symbolizes the wrath of God. Emerald, here with its peaceful green is a symbol of God’s mercy, arching around the throne like a rainbow reminding us of God’s promises to us. This promise was given to us earlier in scripture by Jesus, just before He was to be crucified. In John 14, Jesus says that He would be going to prepare a place of many mansions or rooms for His followers. Then one day He would come to get us so that we can be with Him there forever. In the Book of Revelation, John does his best to describe with earthly words this heavenly vision. But it really must have been indescribable! We look forward to the promise!

The Angel with the Great Chain

This unnamed angel is described in Chapter 20 as coming down out of heaven, obviously straight from the presence of the Lord himself. Some scholars believe this to be the “Angel of the Lord” which in the Old Testament was a reference to Jesus himself. He has been delegated the responsibility and the power to bind Satan with the great chain, rendering him powerless. He throws the bound dragon into the Abyss (the abode of the dead) and with the key he has been given, locks and seals the dragon in for a thousand years. This time period is referred to as the millennium, during which Christ reigns as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

Matthew 25:1-13

 

Jesus told several parables in response to questions from his disciples about the kingdom of heaven and the end of time. This is one of those parables that stressed the importance of being prepared for His second coming. Jesus uses a story of a wedding here to make His point. In those days weddings involved the groom traveling from his house to the house of his bride-to-be in the evening where the wedding would be held. The virgin bride’s maids had to bring lighted lamps to light the way and enter the wedding celebration. In this parable, Jesus says the groom was very late in arriving at night. The bride’s maids had fallen asleep waiting. The wise ones were prepared for the arrival of the groom no matter what time he arrived, so they had brought oil for their lamps. The unwise brought no oil. With no lit lamps they would not be allowed to enter. The oil here is believed to be symbolic of the indwelling Holy Spirit. The wedding house represents heaven and the groom represents Jesus himself. The story stresses the importance of being ready for the return of Jesus, which could happen at any time.

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. We as Christians can withstand and be victorious over all the daily spiritual battles as we go through life. When we become followers of Jesus it does not mean that we start a life that is exempt from problems. In fact sometimes it seems as if we become bigger targets for Satan’s attacks.

Lord of the Horses

 

The inspiration behind this illustration of the heavenly white horses comes from Revelation Chapter 19, where it says that when Jesus returns to destroy all that is evil and set up His Millennial kingdom, He will come in the clouds riding victoriously on a white horse. The same scripture also goes on to say that all of His  believers will also come following behind Him riding on white horses. This scripture has to make us wonder; where are all these white horses now as they await that one day when Jesus rounds them all up to carry all the saints from all the ages? This illustration shows Jesus as he might possibly be preparing the heavenly horses for that big day. But, He seems to be saying to the anxious horses, “stay calm, wait, that day is coming very soon.” the horse in the middle of the illustration bears the collar that signifies that is the special one on whom Jesus will ride. He belongs to “The Lord of the Horses” who is the Lord of all, that is Jesus.

Ezekiel’s Vision

Ezekiel, Chapter 1 and Chapter 10

 

Of all the visions described in the Bible, this one in the first chapter of Ezekiel seems to be one of the most intriguing and hard to imagine. While in Babylonian captivity Ezekiel receives this vision. He sees the presence of God, as molten metal or a flaming fire seated on a throne of sparkling blue sapphire, with a rainbow encircling Him in the clouds. The throne seems to be transported by four cherubim who have beside them four wheels that can go in any direction. What a sight it all must have been to behold! In the chapter’s concluding verses, Ezekiel records his reaction in verse 26: “This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. When I saw it, I fell face down, and I heard the voice of one speaking.”

Although the Four Gospels do not give a physical description of Jesus as he walked on this earth, artists have tried to capture His humanity; His personality. But this artwork captures His Deity; His glorious majesty and power.
